Goal: Jeffrey and MaryAnne; breeders of the Alaskan Klee Kai, breed with several goals in mind; produce dogs that are an improvement of the breed regarding health, temperament and quality, and insure any bred pups are an improvement of their parents.
Alakkawa Kennels goal concerning this website is to educate those interested in the very rare and precious little gem called Alaskan Klee Kai. The breeders wish provide to those who are interested in this breed a broad idea as to what it means to become a part of the Alakkawa family.
Alakkawa Kennels goal is to place their puppies where they will be provided appropriate veterinarian care, remain updated on all shots and de-worming, proper socialization, a huge amount of exercise, be happy, and most importantly – loved. It is also just as important for you to be happy with one of their Alaskan Klee Kai. The breeders know and you should be made aware, there is no one breed of dog that is the right for everyone and the Alaskan Klee Kai is no exception.
The breeders next goal (after the above is met) is to screen applicants interested in adopted an AKK from Alakkawa Kennels.
Applicant Screening: The breeders screen applicants with an intense questionnaire (almost 50 questions) so they will know for certain the potential adopted families will give the same quality care they have given their puppy's from the time each were born.
Alakkawa Kennels questionnaire must be filled out in its entirety before any decisions are made. If any part of the questionnaire is left blank, the questionnaire will be rejected. If a question does not apply to you, simply type N/A at the end of the question. This insures the breeders at Alakkawa Kennels that you have at least read the question. You are required to provide the breeders with two professional references and one personal reference; no family members though please.
Alakkawa Kennels conducts phone interviews with you and the references you list on the questionnaire for them to contact. Please be sure to notify the references that one of the breeders will call them and be sure the breeder can get in touch with your listed references. If the breeder cannot reach one or more of the references, then your application will be delayed; in the interim someone else could come along and get approved for the puppy you wish to adopt.
Once you contact the breeders to request a questionnaire, the breeders will more than likely screen you before sending you a questionnaire. If the breeders feel comfortable in sending you a questionnaire, please provide them with at least 3-5 photographs; one of yourself (either by yourself or with a family member), and several of your yard.
Adoption Fee and Adoption Process: Please visit Alakkawa Kennels "Read all about it" page to learn more about Alakkawa Kennels adoption fee and adoption process.
The breeders will be happy to answer any additional questions which are not answered within the pages of this website. Please read this website before sending questions as the breeders have worked very hard to try to answer many possible questions about the Alaskan Klee Kai. If you find a question is not answered within the content of this website, you may send the breeders an email.
Breeder Contact: A relationship and continued communication is imperative with any person(s) who adopts an Alaskan Klee Kai from Alakkawa Kennels (and should be with every breeder of any breed), for the life of a dog.
Adopted Families: Adopted families who have the pleasure of adopting an Alaskan Klee Kai from Alakkawa Kennels should expect MaryAnne or Jeffrey to communicate with them and they expect new owners to communicate with them as well. If a breeder does not follow-up on contracts written, or on the puppies they have raised, and then have allowed an Alaskan Klee Kai to be adopted by a family, then he/she may not be a very responsible breeder. Always do your own research on the breeder even if you decide not to pursue the adoption of an Alaskan Klee Kai.
Please visit Alakkawa Kennels, "AKK Breeder Questions" page if you have questions regarding adopting an Alaskan Klee Kai from Alakkawa Kennels.
If you do not have the time to educate yourself on this breed, this breed is not for you!
If you do not have the time to further understand that you must exercise this breed, this breed is not for you!
If you do not have the time to devote to put forth the much needed effort on your own part, this breed is not for you!
Sending the breeders updated photos: Alakkawa Kennels requires new families to send updated photos once a month, every month for the first year of the pup's life and every three months thereafter (per their contract). If you cannot agree with the breeders' policy on remaining in touch with them, then you may wish to find another breeder. Alakkawa Kennels require new owners to remain in touch with them, again by sending them updated pictures once a month, every month, (via email only - Facebook tagged photos - even though tagging is allowed and appreciated - the photos must also be sent via email to MaryAnne) every month for the first year of the pups life and every three months thereafter.
Age and Credit: Please read this as the breeders will not consider anyone to adopt any of their pups unless you fit this criterion. The breeders have a right to set this standard (and any other standard), and they stand firm on all their decisions. Therefore, if you are not 25-years-old or over, do not have established credit and a major credit card; you will want to consider finding another breeder.
Alakkawa Kennels requires you to be over 18-years-old. By law, if you are 18-years-old or younger, you cannot sign a contract. Alakkawa Kennels does not require you to have a major credit card before you are permitted to adopt a puppy from them; however, it is a wise choice to have a credit card should you need one in case an emergency arises with your Alaskan Klee Kai. Most people (beyond 18 and older) have a credit card, but the breeders realize the younger generations just starting out on their own may not.
Owning a pet, especially an Alaskan Klee Kai, is not an inexpensive venture. Should something happen to your Alaskan Klee Kai, you may need back-up funding to pay for care of your Alaskan Klee Kai. If you are younger than 18-years-old and wish to adopt an Alaskan Klee Kai from Alakkawa Kennels, again please know by law you cannot be on a contract and the breeders will not do business with you.
The breeders have run into a situation in the past where a young man wished to adopt from them. The breeders started the process, and this young man's mother told him he could not adopt a puppy. This young man was 21-years-old, in college, did not have established credit and wished to set up a payment plan with the breeders. Since this young man had to decline finishing the process because his mother told him he could not adopt a puppy, the breeders then had to start the process over entirely. In essence, it wasted the breeder’s time communicating with this young man and the breeder’s time is very valuable to them.
Alakkawa Kennels had a request from someone who wished to adopt a puppy and this person had no credit or a major credit card. This person asked the breeders to cover future vet care; shots, etc. The breeders cannot and will not do this for anyone. Once you are permitted to adopt an Alaskan Klee Kai from Alakkawa Kennels, you need to be responsible in having the funding readily accessible for you to continue healthcare for your puppy per the contract should you be granted the wonderful opportunity to adopt a puppy.
The breeders will not allow one of their pups to go to just anyone, unless the person can pay in full; whether the payment is for the deposit fee or the adoption fee. The breeders do not feel comfortable with a payment plan option for a puppy. Other breeders may do this, but Alakkawa Kennels breeders simply do not feel comfortable in doing this.
Turning down folks: Alakkawa Kennels reserves the right to turn down anyone for any reason. And, they have turned down several people for one reason or another. Nevertheless, they are very selective with families who wish to adopt an Alakkawa puppy, and they hope you will appreciate this process. After all, they raise their puppies from the time they are born and their puppies are just like our children. They hope you will understand this process and this particular standard.
Alakkawa Kennels is NOT a scam and Alakkawa Kennels is NOT a puppy mill. Alakkawa Kennels has four Alaskan Klee Kai and only two of their four (Abby and Chance) are permitted to breed.
The breeders at Alakkawa Kennels are real people with real live Alaskan Klee Kai.
